WINSTON-SALEM ? Keeping the lead might have been the most difficult part for Wake Forest on Saturday, but the Demon Deacons made it to the end with the upper hand against Boston College.

Needing nearly every bit of their double-digit lead, the Demon Deacons held on for a 75-72 victory at Joel Coliseum.

?I used the term resilient against Virginia, and that term applies once again to this basketball team,? Wake Forest coach Jeff Bzdelik said. ?We built ourselves a lead. I thought we got tentative. We weren?t very aggressive on the offensive end and we were looking for the clock to run out.?

Boston College had chances to take the lead with less than a minute remaining, but a missed layup and a turnover allowed Wake Forest?s C.J. Harris to hit two free throws with four seconds left for the game?s last points.

An Olivier Hanlan shot from behind the 3-point arc at the buzzer fell short for the Eagles.

Harris, a senior guard, notched a career-high 29 points as Wake Forest (9-6 overall, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won for the fifth time in its last six games.

The Demon Deacons led 60-48 with 9:31 left, then saw their lead dwindle with a 23-12 run by Boston College in the next eight minutes.

That was the last of several fluctuations.

Boston College (9-7, 1-2) took a 10-0 lead at the outset before Wake Forest scored the next 11 points. Harris scored nine of those.

An 8-0 run four minutes later gave the Eagles a 28-20 lead. Three 3-pointers before Codi Miller-McIntyre?s layup created an 11-0 run by the Deacons.

Travis McKie finished with 18 points for Wake Forest.

?Travis McKie and C.J. Harris did a great job being leaders on the offensive side of the ball,? Boston College coach Steve Donahue said. ?We didn?t play very well on the offensive side of the ball. Give Wake

Forest credit.?

Boston College?s top scorer, Ryan Anderson, was held in check for most of the game by Devin Thomas.

Anderson, entering Saturday?s contest third in scoring in the ACC, was limited to 12 points, much fewer than the 26 he put up against Virginia Tech on Wednesday. He grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

?I thought Thomas played really hard. He gave Ryan problems catching the basketball, and I think that was key,? Donahue said.

?Obviously, Ryan is a big part of what we do, but he just didn?t get the number of touches that we

wanted him to get, whether it was on a ball screen or down low.?

Thomas, who pulled in 11 rebounds, said: ?In high school, I never really played against bigger guys than me. I think I did an alright job with (Anderson). I had to be physical with him.?

Wake Forest led 38-36 at halftime.

Four minutes into the second half, the Demon Deacons used a 10-2 run to take a 48-38 lead during a stretch when Thomas scored all six of his points. The Eagles got no closer than seven points in the next six minutes.

Lonnie Jackson (23 points) and Hanlan (18 points) led Boston College?s charge back into contention.???

?Boston College was very aggressive,? Bzdelik said. ?They put their heads down and drove, trying to draw fouls and get to the line.?

And, get to the line they did. Boston College went to the foul line 26 times in the second half, scoring 20 of its 36 second-half points with the clock stopped.

The Eagles knocked down 25 free throws in the game, seven more than Wake attempted. The Eagles finished 25 of 33, shooting nearly 76 percent.

?I think when we fell behind we got discouraged and weren?t driving the ball to the basket,? Donahue said. ?But we got to the foul line 26 times. It wasn?t pretty, but we competed.?

-- TIP-INS?:Wake Forest has won six of the past eight meetings between the two teams. ? The Demon Deacons scored points where it counted, posting 17 points off of 17 Eagles turnovers. Wake Forest also scored 23 fast-break points, and Boston College only had four. ? Boston College?s Anderson?s 10 rebounds led the Eagles, reaching his season average.
